ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Chris Carpenter tries for his 15th victory this afternoon as the St. Louis Cardinals conclude their series against the Cincinnati Reds. The series is even at a game apiece after the Reds' 6-1 victory yesterday extended their division lead over the Cardinals to eight games. CHICAGO (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs go for a sweep of the New York Mets today with Ryan Dempster on the mound. The beat the Mets 5-3 yesterday as Starlin Castro became the first Cubs rookie in at least 58 years with six straight multi-hit games. UNDATED (AP) _ Dan Persa had three touchdown passes last night as Northwestern opened its football season with a 23-21 victory over Vanderbilt.
