Local Sports 9/16/13

With beautiful weather outside today, it's appropriate that most of the area high school golf teams will be out on the course for competition. In girls play, Galesburg looks to improve on its 9-0 record in dual meets when they play at Geneseo. The Mid County girls are also playing this afternoon, as they host Farmington. In boys action, Galesburg travels to Rock Island; Knoxville plays at Stark County; Williamsfield hosts Manual; and Mid County welcomes Mercer County.

There's only a few volleyball matches in the area tonight, but one of those involves the Galesburg Silver Streaks. The Streaks, who didn't play any matches last week, host Geneseo tonight at John Thiel Gym. Meanwhile in Williamsfield, the Lady Bombers host North Fulton.

The Galesburg Silver Streaks football team has turned its attention to Peoria Richwoods, as the Knights will be the Streaks' next opponent this Friday night. Galesburg is 2-1 after defeating United Township 20-13 Friday night at Van Dyke Field. Head Coach Tim Dougherty told WGIL in our postgame discussion that nothing comes easy for his undersized team this season.

There's plenty of early-season success for a number of other area schools, as Knoxville, Farmington, Stark County, and Brimfield-Elmwood all improved to 3-0 with wins Friday night.
