Many of the area high school volleyball teams will be in action tonight, including the Knoxville Blue Bullets, who go for their 10th victory of the season when they host Mercer County. Knoxville Head Coach Stacy Kavanaugh told us recently that her team is playing well, but has areas it can improve.
Coach Kavanaugh added that the team has already achieved one goal by winning the tournament at Carl Sandburg College last weekend.
In other volleyball games around the area tonight: Abingdon-Avon hosts South Fulton; United travels to West Prairie; and Monmouth-Roseville plays at Macomb.
Area golf courses will also be full of high school players this afternoon, including at Lake Braken where the Silver Streak girls will host Western Big-6 opponents Moline and Quincy. The GHS girls have won 10 straight dual matches after defeating Geneseo yesterday by 6 strokes. Taylor Nesselroad and Jordan Kohler both had rounds of 42, while Natalie Johnson fired a 45 and Alexis Bush chipped in with a 47 in the victory.
In other girls golf this afternoon, Knoxville hosts Midland at Laurel Greens.
In boys play, the Silver Streaks travel to Aledo to play Mercer County at the Hawthorne Ridge course. Galesburg defeated Rock Island yesterday by 26 strokes, with Jackson Wetherbee and Hunter Nesselroad leading the way with a pair of 37's.
In other boys play today, Monmouth-Roseville hosts Knoxville and United at Gibson Woods.
A Western Big-6 matchup awaits the Galesburg boys soccer team this evening, as the Streaks will play host to United Township. Coach Phil Reddington's team is still searching for their first win of the season.
