We've reached the halfway point of the high school football season, and a pair of 2-and-2 teams will collide tonight at Van Dyke Field, as Galesburg hosts Peoria Notre Dame. The Silver Streaks are looking to bounce back from last week's loss to Richwoods, while the Irish are feeling good after they knocked off previously undefeated Peoria Central. Galesburg head coach Tim Dougherty says tonight's opponent runs out of multiple formations, but keeps their gameplan fairly simple.
"They're very similar to Richwoods," says Dougherty. "There's no glitz and glamour, they just come right at you."
Broadcast time for Silver Streaks football is 7:06 tonight with Brad Bennewitz in the booth and Jim Lee on the sidelines here on WGIL.
Other Western Big 6 teams in action tonight include:
Quincy at Alleman
United Township at Moline
Rock Island at Peoria Central
Elsewhere in high school play tonight, the marquis matchup is in Elmwood, where Knoxville takes it's 4-0 record up against ninth-ranked Elmwood/Brimfield. The winner takes the lead in the Prairieland Conference's Blue Division. The other matchup of undefeated teams will be at Stark County, where the Rebels host upstart River Valley in a key Lincoln Trail Conference game.
Other area football games tonight include:
South Fulton at Abingdon/Avon
Monmouth-Roseville at Chillicothe IVC
Mercer County at Mid County
West Central at United
Annawan/Wethersfield will get a victory tonight without ever taking the field. That's because their scheduled opponent--West Prairie--has forfeited due to a lack of players to compete in the game. It was to have been the homecoming contest for Annawan/Wethersfield.
The Galesburg High School golf teams both won again yesterday. The girls finished their dual season with record of 19-1, after defeating Pekin, Morton, and Bloomington Central Catholic. Jordan Koehler was the medalist with her round of 37. The Silver Streaks boys easily defeated Farmington at Bunker Links. Galesburg had three players shoot in the 30's, and coach Dean Betts says he is proud of his young team.
Being a young team, Dean noted that many of the freshman players had never set foot on some of the courses they have played this fall.
The Streaks boys and girls will be back at it tomorrow when they host the Galesburg Invitational at Bunker Links. Both teams will then compete in the Western Big 6 Conference Meet on Monday. You can hear more about Silver Streaks golf with boy's coach Dean Betts tonight at halftime of the GHS football game.
Both of the area college football teams will be playing on their home fields tomorrow. Knox is looking for its' first win as they host 3-0 Lake Forest, while Monmouth is coming off of a bye week, and will welcome the Cornell Rams. Both games kickoff at 1pm.
The Fighting Illini are also at home in Champaign tomorrow. We'll carry their game with Miami of Ohio beginning at 10:30am here on WGIL
