Mercer County Moves Up, United Drops in Weekly Associated Press High School Football Poll
United's first loss of the season dropped the Red Storm three spots in this week's Associated Press Class 1A high school football poll.

United (6-1) falls from #5 to #8 this week. The Red Storm has regular season games remaining against Peoria Heights and Elmwood-Brimfield, both at home against teams with combined records of 2-12. United will be heavily favored in those games as the squad tries to sew up a first-round playoff game at home and a #1 or #2 seed.

Princeville (6-1) moved up one spot to #9 in the poll after beating Stark County (5-2) 12-0 last week. Bushnell-Prairie City-Avon (5-2) received votes for top ten consideration after defeating Knoxville last week. The top ranked team in 1A is undefeated Dakota.

Mercer County (6-1) moved up a spot to #3 in the Class 2A poll. The Golden Eagles have regular season games remaining at winless West Central and at home against Stark County. Both are West Prairie Trail Northwest Division contests, and Mercer County can run the table in the division with a pair of wins.

Orion (6-1) suffered its first loss of the season against Sherrard last week and dropped from #3 last week to #6 in this week's 2A poll. Morrison (7-0) is ranked #1 again this week. Annawan-Wethersfield, which clinched a playoff berth by shutting out Galva-Williamsfield last week, and Stark County both received votes for consideration but did not crack the top ten.

Illini West is still the #1 ranked team in Class 3A and has yet to be seriously challenged this season. The Chargers routed then #5 rated Pittsfield-Griggsville-Perry (6-1) 60-12 last week. Illini West received 10 of the 11 first-place votes in this week's poll. The Saukees dropped to #8 after suffering their first loss of the season. Sherrard's 36-14 victory last week at Orion helped the undefeated Tigers (7-0) move up two spots to #6 in Class 3A. Sherrard has given up just 55 points through seven games.

Rochester takes over the #1 ranking in Class 4A. The Rockets replace former #1 Bloomington Central Catholic (6-1), which was beaten for the first time this season last week. Rock Island Alleman (5-2) moves up from #7 to #6 in the latest poll. The Pioneers shut out East Moline (21-0) last week to improve to 3-1 in the Western Big Six Conference. Alleman leads the league with just 46 points allowed on defense. Chillicothe IVC (7-0) is #7 this week, up two spots. Geneseo falls to #8 from #5 a week ago after losing to LaSalle-Peru. The Cavaliers (6-1) cracked this week's Class 5A poll at #10.

Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin (7-0) is ranked #1 again this week in 5A. Undefeated Washington remains at #3 while fellow Mid-Illini Conference member Metamora (6-1) drops from #4 to #6 despite winning last week.

Providence is the new #1 in Class 6A. The Celtics (6-1) replace Cary Grove (7-0) after gathering six first-place votes to Cary Grove's three. Rock Island (6-1) remains at #4, tied this week with Lemont (6-1).

East St. Louis (5-2) is #1 in Class 7A and Maine South (7-0) retains the top spot in Class 8A this week.
