WEEK 8 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL RESULTS

-Western Big Six Conference-


Galesburg (3-5, 1-4) at United Township (0-8, 0-5) - GHS' varsity football team snapped a four-game losing streak and picked up a Western Big 6 victory 26-14 over United Township, Friday night. With the win, the Streaks improved to 3-5 on the season and 1-4 in league play. The Panthers dropped their 25th straight game and fell to 0-8 on the season.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL - SATURDAY

Two teams that are unbeaten in the Midwest Conference collide this afternoon in a match-up that could decide the league title.

Nationally ranked Monmouth College (6-0, 5-0 MWC) brings its high-powered offense and stingy defense to Ripon to play the Redhawks (5-1, 5-0). The Fighting Scots have won 17 straight conference games and Ripon's won eight in a row. Monmouth's last loss in the league was a 27-20 defeat in Wisconsin against the Red Hawks.

The game kicks off at 1:00.

Knox College tries again for its first win of the season on the road at Lawrence University.

Both teams have 0-6 records and are winless in Midwest Conference play. The Prairie Fire lost last week at home to Grinnell 27-12 while the Vikings were beaten 28-14 by previously winless Lake Forest College.

The kickoff from Appleton, Wisconsin is at 1:00 Saturday afternoon.


Illinois (1-4, 0-3) goes for its first Big Ten victory of the season Saturday at Indiana (3-3, 0-2). The Illini have won two straight against the Hoosiers and 12 of the last 17 in the series. - Kickoff at 6:00 / coverage begins at 5:30 on WGIL AM 1400

LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL GOLF

Galesburg High School's boys and girls teams are competing in the Class 2A state golf tournaments (Friday and Saturday) - the boys in Normal and the girls in Carbondale. The boys are in 7th place 14 shots behind the leaders Sacred Heart-Griffin from Springfield who shot a team total of 318. Sophomore Jacob Schwieter led the streaks by shooting a 9-over 80 on the day. The girls shot a +72 to trail leaders Homewood-Flossmor by 56 shots. Sophomore Marissa Vinson led the streaks with a +11 83.


Area boys golfers who qualified for the Class 1A state meet in Bloomington are Alex Ott of Williamsfield +19 91, Connor Gillen of Monmouth-Roseville +15 87, Taylor Smith of West Central +16 88 and Jake Gavin of United +13 85.

NASCAR

Jimmie Johnson has the pole position and the points lead heading into Saturday night's Sprint Cup Race at Lowe's Motor Speedway. The Banking 500 in Charlotte can be heard on FM95 (94.9 FM) beginning at 5:15.
