|United 8th, Alleman Out in Latest Associated Press High School Football Poll
|12:30 p-m 10/21/9 One local high school football team stayed put and a member of the Western Big Six dropped out of the latest Associated Press High School Football Poll.
United (7-1) remains at #8 in Class 1A after last week's win over Peoria Heights. The Red Storm look to finish the regular season strong Friday night at home against 1-7 Elmwood-Brimfield.
Princeville (7-1) stays at #9 in the 1A poll after shutting out Abingdon (44-0) last week for the team's fifth win in a row. The Princes will be the favorites when they seek their eighth victory in the regular season finale Friday night on the road against Galva-Williamsfield (1-7). Undefeated Dakota picked up 10 of the 12 points for the top ranking in Class 1A. Brown County, also undefeated, is #2 after receiving the remaining votes.
Mercer County (7-1) moved up one spot to #2 - tied with Casey-Westfield (8-0) - in Class 2A following last week's 66-6 win against West Central. The Golden Eagles have a tough match-up to wrap up the regular season Friday night at home against Stark County (6-2). The Rebels received votes for top ten consideration but did not crack the poll.
Orion (7-1) moved up two spots to #4 in 2A. The Chargers wrap up the regular season on the road Friday night against 4-4 Princeton.
Annawan-Wethersfield (8-1), the winner of the West Prairie Trail Northeast Division, is tied with Milford and Marshall for 10th in Class 2A. The Titans blanked Lewistown 33-0 last week and host Abingdon (3-5) in their regular season finale. Morrison (8-0) is again the top ranked team.
Illini West received 11 of 12 first-place votes to retain its hold as the top-rated team in Class 3A. The defending state champion Chargers (8-0) conclude the regular season at winless Mendon Unity. Undefeated Sherrard stays at #6. The Tigers, champions of the Olympic Conference, play their final regular season game Saturday at 3-4 Melrose Park Walther Lutheran.
Rock Island Alleman (5-3) dropped out of the Class 4A poll with last week's loss against Quincy (7-1). The Pioneers need to beat Dunlap to assure themselves a spot in the playoffs, while the Eagles at 5-3 are in a similar position. Geneseo (6-2) moves up two spots to #6 in the 4A poll.
Washington (8-0) remains at #3 in the Class 5A poll and conference foe Metamora (7-1) moves up from #6 to 5th this week. Undefeated Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin is the unanimous #1 ranked team in 5A.
Rock Island (7-1) beat Moline (2-6) for its seventh win in a row last week but dropped from 4th to 5th in the Class 6A poll. Richwoods (7-1), which lost two weeks ago to Quincy Notre Dame for the Mid State Six Conference championship and routed Woodruff last week, dropped out of the top ten. Providence (7-1) is again the #1 ranked team in 6A.
The top teams in Class 7A and 8A are the same this week: East St. Louis (6-2) and Maine South (8-0).
The IHSA will announce the 256 teams that qualify for the playoffs Saturday night at 8:00 on the IHSA TV Network. The Class 1A pairings will be first at 8:05 p-m, followed every five minutes by the remaining classes.
