|Zook: U of I Offensive Problems Not Related to New Coordinator
|CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Under new offensive coordinator Mike Schultz, Illinois' offense has fallen from one of the most productive in the Big Ten to one of the worst.
Former coordinator Mike Locksley left to be head coach at New Mexico, and Schultz came to Illinois from high-scoring TCU.
With Penn State coming to Champaign on Saturday, Illinois coach Ron Zook says he understands that people wonder if Schultz is part of the problem. But the head coach insists his new hire isn't to blame for the drop off.
Illinois was third in scoring offense in the Big Ten last year. The Illini were also tops in pass offense and fifth in rushing. This fall, they're last in scoring and passing and third in rushing.
Quarterback Juice Williams says the Illini aren't throwing downfield much this year because of the defenses they're facing.
