Monmouth College - 59
Grinnell College - 0
The Fighting Scots scored every time they touched the ball in the first quarter against Grinnell (1-4, 1-3).
Monmouth put a school-record 42 points on the board in the first quarter, including a 37-yard interception return by Luke Reschke as the Scots improved to 5-0 on the season.
Caleb Pratt led the ground offense with three TDs - two in the first half - and 140 yards rushing. Alex Tanney completed 21-of-29 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns while Monmouth racked up their fourth consecutive 500-plus yard game.
Freshman kicker Matt Batton's school-record 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter put an exclamation point on the win. Monmouth's defense yielded just 31 yards rushing and 159 yards total as Adam Hoste made a team-high nine tackles and Anthony Goranson recorded a pair of sacks.
Monmouth's defense tallied four sacks and five interceptions on the afternoon.
St. Norbert College - 56
Knox College - 13
Knox College got off to a good start at St. Norbert College, but whatever confidence the Prairie Fire had early in the game was quickly dashed.
Knox (0-5, 0-3) tied the game at 7-7 in the first quarter when quarterback Bill Meyer hit Brent Newman for a 46-yard touchdown. But St. Norbert (5-0, 4-0) scored seven straight touchdowns to win going away.
The Green Knights are tied with Monmouth College for first-place in the Midwest Conference. The conference crown could be decided when the two teams play in Monmouth on October 10th, which is also M-C's Homecoming.
High School Football
Princeville (5-1) shut out Peoria Heights (1-5) 45-0
Galesburg High School's freshman team blanked Quincy 14-0.
The Streaks (4-2) scored in the first quarter when Will Anderson connected with Ryan Carl for a 67-yard touchdown. The two hooked up again the next play for a two-point conversion and an 8-0 Streaks lead.
Galesburg added another touchdown in the second quarter on a 55-yard touchdown run by Michael Varner.
The GHS defense pitched its second shutout of the season. Joe Peterson had three sacks and Carl picked off a pass.
Galesburg has won three straight games. The next game is Saturday at Moline at 11 a-m.
It was the second defensive shutout for the Silver Streaks, who've now won three games in a row.
High School Boys Soccer
Galesburg defeated Pekin 2-1. The Silver Streaks (8-1-5) have now won two straight matches.
High School Cross Country
Galesburg High School's boys team finished 17th and the GHS girls team was 24th at the Peoria High School Invitational.
High School Girls Swimming
Galesburg won its own junior varsity invitational against five other schools. GHS finished two points ahead of Pleasant Valley. Davenport Central was third.
Local College Sports
Monmouth College's volleyball team beat Carroll University 3-2
Lake Forest beat Knox College (3-7, 0-2) 3-1 in men's soccer
Knox College's women's soccer team lost to Lake Forest 10-3 (Knox record 1-8-0, 0-1-0 MWC)
Grinnell College defeated Monmouth College 2-0 in men's soccer
