| ISU Young But Hoping to Surprise MVC Foes |
NORMAL, Ill. (AP) -- Ten of Illinois State's 15 men's basketball players are freshmen or sophomores, but senior guard Alex Rubin isn't ready to concede that this season will be dedicated to rebuilding.
Rubin told The (Bloomington) Pantagraph at the team's media day on Wednesday that the Redbirds could be this year's sleeper team in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Illinois State finished 22-11 last season and made the National Invitation Tournament for the third straight year.
Coach Tim Jankovich says this year's team is much younger than his first Redbird team but shares the hungry attitude that propelled that group to a 25-10 record.
Illinois State opens the season Nov. 14 at home against Southern Illinois Edwardsville.
