Rookies Overton, Watson Lead US to Early Edge
NEWPORT, Wales (AP) -- The United States has the early edge at the Ryder Cup, grabbing a 2{-1{ lead after the rain delayed opening foursomes.

Rookies Jeff Overton and Bubba Watson gave the Americans their first full point Saturday with a 3-and-2 victory over the favored team of Luke Donald and Padraig Harrington. Then Steve Stricker and Tiger Woods sent the Americans into the lead with a 2 up win over Ian Poulter and Ross Fisher.

This is a busy day at Celtic Manor because of Friday's rain delay, which lasted more than seven hours. Just 12 minutes after Stricker and Woods wrapped up their win, the first of six alternate shot matches is scheduled to tee off. If the good weather holds, a third session with two alternate-shot matches and four more fourballs will begin in the late afternoon.
