|Johnson Thrills Kids With Hometown Visit
|EL CAJON, Calif. (AP) -- Jimmie Johnson is taking a break from his chase for a fifth straight NASCAR Sprint Cup championship to visit a middle school in his hometown.
Johnson dazzled several hundred students at Emerald STEM Magnet Middle School when he pulled up in a replica of his No. 48 car. The school received a $100,000 grant from Johnson's foundation for computers and other equipment for its automation and robotics lab. Johnson says he likes to visit schools to see how the grant money is spent.
Fittingly, several eighth graders showed Johnson computer-controlled cars they've built thanks to his donation.
Johnson holds a golf tournament in the San Diego area each year, with the proceeds going to local causes.
