High school regional volleyball tournaments get underway around the area tonight. The Galesburg Silver Streaks will be playing Geneseo in the class 3A event in Monmouth. The winner of tonight's match will play top-seeded Chillicothe IVC tomorrow. Elsewhere, Knoxville is the top seed at the class 2A regional at United, where the Blue Bullets will play tomorrow night against the winner of tonight's match between Mercer County and West Central. In class 1A action at Annawan, ROWVA faces Ridgewood and Williamsfield meets Galva tonight.


The Galesburg High School Freshman football team finished it's season with a record of 6-3, after topping Peoria Central 23-8 on Saturday. The previous night, the GHS varsity finished it's season with a 56-34 loss to Peoria. The win allowed Peoria to make the playoffs with a 5-4 record, while the Silver Streaks finished at 3-and-6. Head coach Tim Dougherty said after the game that he really had a banged-up team that gave it their all this season.

All six of Galesburg's losses came to teams that made the playoffs.

College Football

Monmouth College running back Trey Yocum has earned Midwest Conference Player of the Week honors. Yocum, who is now the school's all-time rushing leader, rumbled for 277 yards in the Scot's 31-7 win over Lawrence on Saturday. Yocum is in his senior season at Monmouth, following a stellar high school career at Bushnell-Prairie City.
