| Area High School Football Teams Gearing Up for State Quarterfinal Matchups |
UPDATED 1:10 p-m 11/9/09 Five high school football teams from the area are among the "Elite 8" in their respective classes after winning their second round games Saturday afternoon. United, for the second straight week, pulled out a dramatic victory by winning at Heyworth 28-27. The Red Storm (10-1) host top seed and undefeated Lexington (11-0) in the Class 1A state quarterfinals.
South Fulton (8-3) advanced to the third round by defeated Greenfield-Northwestern 16-6. The Rebels will play at Tuscola (8-3), which knocked off top seed and previously undefeated Brown County 21-18. Annawan-Wethersfield (10-1) won at Amboy 33-21 in Class 2A and next will host Gibson City (10-1), which took down Mercer County 60-19 in their second round matchup. Orion (10-1) moves on to the third round after scoring two fourth quarter touchdowns and beating Knoxville (8-3) 21-18. The Chargers will face undefeated and top seed Morrison (11-0), a 42-0 winner against Lanark Eastland. Peoria Richwoods (10-1) is still alive in Class 5A. The Knights traveled to deep southern Illinois and beat Marion 24-19, setting up a rematch with undefeated Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin (11-0). Griffin won last season's quarterfinal matchup against Richwoods.
