| U of I Strike Looming |
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Graduate students who teach and research assistants at the University of Illinois have authorized a strike over a wage dispute. The Graduate Employees' Organization says 92 percent of its members voted to strike. Spokesman Peter Campbell says a strike could happen at any time. The union says its 2,700 members teach close to a quarter of undergraduate course hours at the Urbana-Champaign campus. Interim Provost Robert Easter says the campus expects a strike to start Monday. University spokeswoman Robin Kaler says the campus is preparing for classes without striking instructors. The union wants higher pay for its members and disagrees with the university that tuition waivers should count as compensation.
