| Area Football Teams Preparing for Second Round Playoff Games |
POSTED 10:58 a-m 11/2/09, UPDATED 2:11 p-m 11/2/09 Two local high school football teams that won their first-round playoff games are making preparations for round two. In Class 1A, United (9-1) escaped Flanagan 21-20 in overtime at home last Saturday. The Red Storm are on the road Saturday at 1 p-m in the second round at Heyworth (7-3), which won its opening round game at Princeville 20-13. Also alive is South Fulton (7-3). The Rebels won at Pawnee 24-14 and will face Greenfield-Northwestern (7-3), a 9-7 winner against Pleasant Hill, in the first round Saturday at 2 p-m in Table Grove. The winner of the United/Heyworth game plays the winner of the second round game between undefeated Lexington (10-0) and LeRoy (8-2) in the quarterfinals. The South Fulton/Greenfield winner advances to play either undefeated Brown County (10-0) or Tuscola (7-3) in round three. Knoxville (8-2) hosts Orion Saturday at 1:00 in Class 2A. The Blue Bullets made the long trip to Milford and dominated their first-round game, winning 30-6. Orion (9-1) edged Stark County 24-21 at home to move on to the second round. The winner meets either undefeated Morrison (10-0) or Lanark Eastland (8-2) in the third round. Mercer County (8-2), a 22-19 winner at home against Bureau Valley in the opening round, travels to Gibson City (9-1) Saturday afternoon at 2:00. Gibson City took out Riverdale 25-6 in their first round matchup. Another area team, Annawan-Wethersfield (9-1), plays at Amboy (9-1) Saturday at 1 p-m. The Titans beat Clifton 23-21 at home and Amboy shut out Alwood-Rowva 41-0. The winner plays the winner of the Mercer County/Gibson City game in the quarterfinals. Defending Class 3A state champion Illini West (10-0) plays Monticello (8-2) in Carthage Saturday at 2:00 in the second round. The Chargers routed Riverton 56-0 in the first round and Monticello won a shootout against Camp Point Central/Southeastern 57-40. The Illini West/Monticello winner advances to the quarterfinals to play either undefeated Wilmington (10-0) or St. Joseph Ogden (8-2). Geneseo (8-2) plays at Kankakee McNamara (6-4) Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in Class 4A. The Irish, a #16 seed but a storied football program, shut out previously undefeated and #1 seed Chillicothe IVC 32-0 on the Grey Ghosts' home field. The Maple Leafs downed Plano 33-16 for the right to advance. The winner will play either Morris (8-2) or Mendota (8-2) in the state quarterfinals. Peoria Richwoods (9-1) has a long trip for its second-round game. The Knights beat Springfield 35-18 in Peoria in the first round of the Class 5A playoffs and now have to travel to deep southern Illinois to play Marion (9-1) Saturday at 4 p-m.
Marion won its first round game against Decatur MacArthur 24-7. The winner of the Richwoods/Marion game plays either undefeated Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin (10-0), the top ranked team in Class 5A, or Chatham Glenwood (8-2) - a long-time rival of Griffin's and a fellow member of the Central State Eight Conference. Sacred Heart Griffin beat Richwoods last year to end the Knights' season. |
