High School Football State Quarterfinals
Five area high school football teams eyeing a spot in the state semifinals play Saturday afternoon. United (10-1) hosts Lexington (11-0) in the Class 1A quarterfinals at 1:00. The winner will face either Lena-Winslow (10-1) or East Dubuque (10-1). South Fulton (8-3) plays in the other 1A bracket at Tuscola (8-3) at 4:00. The winner moves on to play either defending state champion Triopia (10-1) or Jacksonville Routt (8-3). Annawan-Wethersfield (10-1) hosts Gibson City (10-1) at 2:00 in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Whoever wins that game will play the winner of the third-round matchup between Orion (10-1) and Morrison (11-0) at Morrison at 1:00. Peoria Richwoods (10-1) hosts Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin (11-0) at 1:00. The winner plays either Washington (11-0) or Joliet Catholic Academy (9-2) in the Class 5A quarterfinals.
Top 25 Men's College Basketball
Ohio State, the 16th-ranked team in the AP basketball rankings, crushed James Madison 72-44 in the on game involving a ranked team Thursday night. Evan Turner led the way with 24 points and 17 rebounds.
The men's college basketball season starts Friday night for five Illinois schools:
SIU-Edwardsville at Illinois, 7 p.m. Western Illinois at Arizona State, 8 p.m. Northern Illinois at Northwestern, 7 p.m. Loyola at Kansas State, 7 p.m. Concorida University at Chicago State, 7 p.m.

Volleyball State Finals
A Western Big Six team will be trying to bring home a state volleyball championship. Quincy, this year's Big Six champion with a perfect 10-0 record, meets LaGrange Lyons Township in the Class 4A state semifinals Friday night at 7:30 at Redbird Arena. The Blue Devils (37-3) lost just one set in conference play this season, on October 15th when Quincy defeated conference runner-up Moline two games to one. The Blue Devils went on to beat United Township in the semifinals and the Maroons in the championship of the Moline Regional. Quincy advanced to state by winning the Normal West Sectional - beating both Normal Community and O'Fallon in straight sets - and the Normal Community Supersectional when the Blue Devils toppled Benet Academy in two games. LaGrange Lyons Township (36-4) beat Oak Lawn, Oak Park Fenwick, Chicago St. Ignatius and Chicago Mother McAuley - all in two games - to qualify for the state semifinals. The Blue Devils are making their second state appearance in school history and their first since 1999. |
