Monmouth College Football Team Playing Waiting Game
POSTED 8:47 a-m 11/13/09 The Monmouth College football team knows the drill - wait to find out who its first-round playoff opponent will be.

Finish the season undefeated, win the Midwest Conference title, wrap up an automatic NCAA Division III playoff berth - and wait.

For the second year in a row and the third time since 2005, the Fighting Scots have a week off before resuming their season. The Scots have climbed to No. 8 in the D3football.com and American Football Coaches Association and now must rely on the NCAA selection committee to determine their fate. The pairings will be announced Sunday between 2 and 2:30 p.m. on ESPNews, available on some cable systems and on DirecTV (channel 207) and Dish Network (channel 142).

Achieving its highest ranking in the history of the program doesn't guarantee Monmouth a home game in the opening round. The Scots are in the loaded West region, where six of the top 10 schools in the nation reside. Monmouth is ranked fifth in the region behind top-ranked UW-Whitewater, St. John's (Minn.), Linfield and Central (Iowa).

The Scots, or any of the schools, could be moved out of region, increasing Monmouth's chances of a home game on November 21st.

Head coach Steve Bell and his team aren't worrying about their next opponent just yet.

'We're just happy to be in this position,' said Bell. 'We'll play whoever and wherever the committee tells us.'

The Scots have played as a team all season, and that won't change Sunday when the Scots and their families gather en masse to learn their fate for the second straight year.
