Four Silver Streak Football Players Named First-Team All-Western Big Six Performers
POSTED 10:07 a-m 11/16/09 Nine members of the 2009 Galesburg High School football team have received All-Western Big Six Conference recognition.

GHS coach Wes Olson announced the Streaks' all-conference selections at the 2009 Silver Streaks Football Banquet Saturday night at the Galesburg American Legion.

Four Galesburg players earned All-Western Big Six First-Team honors: junior Kevin Heard as a defensive lineman, senior Caleb Ollman as a fullback, junior Ryan Ricketts as an offensive lineman and senior Aaron Meredith as a free safety.

The honorable mention selections are senior Dan Junk (OL), junior Cole Spinks (LB), senior Shane Clark (LB), junior Ryan Ricketts (DL) and an at-large player.

Olson says the at-large player is voted on by the coaches at the end of the meeting. "A guy who kind of does a lot of different things for (the team) but maybe didn't get recognized in the program," Olson said. "The guy that I nominated for the at-large player because of his ability to return punts and play (in) the defensive backfield and be an outstanding receiver for us was Nate Olin."

Olin was in the football program all four years Olson has been the Streaks' head coach.

The players voted on the team awards, which are given out each year at the banquet. Ricketts, who was not able to attend the banquet, received the team's Most Valuable Lineman Award. Junior Robert Jackson was voted to receive the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award, Spinks received the Most Valuable Defensive Player Award, Meredith earned the Iron Man Award, Clark was the recipient of the Silver Streaks Core Values Award and there was a tie for Most Valuable Player: Jackson and Meredith.

Galesburg, which was saddled by injuries to junior quarterback Andrew Steck - an all-conference performer a year ago - and senior running back/linebacker Drexler Blue, finished this past season with a 4-5 record.

The sophmore team coached by Jake Miller finished with a 5-4 mark. The freshman team, coached by Brad Swanson, went 6-3 and recorded four shutouts.
