|Rams to Provide Big Time Test for Silver Streaks
|POSTED 11:17 a-m 11/25/09 Galesburg gets a major test Wednesday night in the Streaks' second game of the Thanksgiving Tournament at Thiel Gymnasium.
The Silver Streaks beat Woodruff 65-51 in their first game Monday night. Galesburg scored the first 10 points of the game before Woodruff eventually settled in went on a 40-23 scoring run from that point to go up by seven points (40-33) mid-way through the third quarter. The Streaks responded by scoring 11 of the next 15 points to tie the game at 44-44 at the end of the third, then outscored Woodruff 21-7 in the fourth quarter to earn the win.
Victor Davis had a career night with 40 points and 11 rebounds. He scored 26 points in the second half, including 18 of his team's 21 in the fourth quarter. Dalton Davis was the only other Galesburg player to reach double-figures with 10 points.
Up next is Peoria Manual, which pounded Galesburg 82-43 in Peoria last season and has won six straight games against the Silver Streaks.
Manual features an outstanding trio in senior Marvin Jordan, Woodruff transfer Andrew Jordan, a junior, and senior Lawrence Alexander. Alexander led the Rams with 19 points in Manual's season-opening 63-36 win against Pekin. Marvin Jordan added 15 points for Manual, which is ranked #1 in the state in Class 2A. The Rams jumped on Pekin early for a 15-7 first quarter lead, extended the Dragon's deficit to 13 at the half, then outscored Pekin 31-17 in the second half.
The only apparent flaw in Manual's first game was free-throw shooting - an 8-of-17 performance at the stripe. However, Galesburg didn't fare much better at 13-of-25.
Galesburg's last victory against Manual was during the 2003-04 season - a 78-69 Streaks win that snapped a nine-game losing skid against the Rams.
Manual leads the all-time series with Galesburg 42-41. Pregame coverage begins at 7:06 on WGIL AM-1400.
The first game Wednesday night pits Pekin (0-1) against Peoria Woodruff (0-1) at 6:00.
