Lake Forest College (6-11-1, 3-5-1) shut out Monmouth College 1-0. The Fighting Scots' record falls to 2-13-1 overall with the loss and 1-7-1 in Midwest Conference play.
Lake Forest College (12-6, 7-2) blanked Monmouth College 3-0. Monmouth's record dropped to 4-4-1 in Midwest Conference play and 6-11-1 overall.
Carl Sandburg College's women's cross country team is advancing to the NJCAA National Championship after a second-place finish over the weekend at the Region IV meet in Sugar Grove.
Sauk Valley was the team winner with 29 points. The Chargers tied with Elgin for second with 57. The tiebreaker by NCAA rules gave the Chargers the second-place finish 3-2 over Elgin.
Monmouth-Roseville graduate Morgan Melvin led CSC with a 7th place finish (22:39), followed closely by Tia Wunder in 9th. Chelsea Brown was 16th, Sarah Heller 17th, and Kelli Collins 27th.
"Times were not a factor on the course, which had much standing water and mud," CSC coach Bruce Tracy said. "The cold wind made it a difficult day to compete. After the illnesses and injuries our team has gone through lately, it was a great day to come through with the runner-up finish."
In the men's 8K race, Waubonsee dominated the team competition with 16 points. The Chargers finished 8th of the nine teams in the meet. Wes Anderson was the first finisher for Sandburg in 14th place. Travis Anderson finished 21st, Justin Calhoun 33rd, Mike Sagona 45th, and Joe Shepherd 48th.
"Our men's team has had even more problems than the women this season with injuries and illness, so it was a courageous effort by some of them to even venture into competition (today), " said Tracy. "This year our region is very rich with talent on the men's rosters."
The NJCAA national meet is November 14th in Peoria at Newman Golf Course. The Sandburg entries will be the entire women's team plus Wes Anderson and Joe Shepherd from the men's team.
