|Monmoth College Men's Basketball Team to Test WIU in Exhibition Game
|POSTED 10:13 a-m 11/5/9 Monmouth College's men's basketball team gets a chance that doesn't come around too often Thursday night: go up against a Division I team.
The Fighting Scots travel to Macomb to play Western Illinois University in an exhibition game at Western Hall. The Leathernecks are coached by Jim Molinari, who's in his second year. The Scots are led by third-year coach and former University of Wisconsin star Mark Vershaw.
Western returns three starters from last season's team that went 9-20 overall, including a 6-12 mark in the Summit League. Monmouth finished last season with an 8-15 record and went 5-11 in Midwest Conference play.
WIU and Monmouth College met last year in exhibition play, a game won by Western 72-61 after the two teams were deadlocked at the half. The Scots stayed in the game by shooting 7-of-11 from three-point range in the first half and 10-of-18 overall.
Zach Ott, a 6'7" forward from East Peoria who's now a senior, scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds to lead Monmouth. Quinton Kirby had 14 points and David Nurse scored 12 points and dished out 6 assists for WIU. Both are senior guards for the Leathernecks this season.
Thursday night's matchup is the 13th meeting between the two colleges on the hardwood, with WIU winning 11 of the previous 12. The contest is the only exhibition game for either school, and admission is free. The tip-off is at 7:00.
Monmouth College resumes play November 15th at Minnesota State University.
