SIU Baseball Coach Dead at 52
CARTERVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- University officials say Southern Illinois University head baseball coach Dan Callahan has died at his home in Carterville at the age of 52.

The 52-year-old Callahan died Monday after battling a rare form of skin cancer since 2006.

Callahan was a recent recipient of the Missouri Valley Conference Most Courageous Award.

SIU athletic director Mario Moccia said the Springfield-born Callahan was the second-winningest coach in school history, with a record of 442 wins, 447 losses and one tie in 16 seasons.

Before joining SIU in 1994, Callahan spent five years as head coach at Eastern Illinois. The Quincy College graduate also coached high school baseball in Springfield after pitching in both the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners organizations.

Callahan is survived by his wife, Stacy, two daughters, and his parents.
