|Lewistown was the only area football team to survive the 2nd round of the High School Football Playoffs, with Saturday's win over North Fulton. Mercer County and Annawan/Wethersfield got crushed, while Stark County surrendered an early lead and was upset by Lexington. In the larger school classes, two of Galesburg's opponents moved on, as Alleman and Richwoods both won in blowouts, but Rock Island's season ended with a loss to Crete-Monee.
In college football, Monmouth won its 12th straight bronze turkey game over Knox 42-6.
In the pool, the Galesburg girls swim team won the Western Big-6 swim meet for the fourth consecutive year at East Moline on Saturday.
At the state cross country championships, Farmington's Chase Coffey won the class 1A title at Detweiler Park in Peoria.
The team that knocked Galesburg out of the soccer sectional wound up winning the state title with ease, as Peoria Notre Dame shutout Norridge Ridgewood 8-0 Saturday.
The Carl Sandburg College Volleyball team called it a season, falling in the Region 4 Tournament to nationally ranked Kishwaukee in three games. Sandburg had beaten Sauk Valley to get to the title match. The Chargers finished the season with a 24-14 mark.
It was a good weekend for the CSC men's basketball team, which beat McHenry College 77-74 on the road Friday night, then went to Elgin and prevailed 79-76 on Saturday. (2-1 record)
Galesburg American Legion baseball coach Steve Cheeseman announced that Galesburg has been named the host site for next summer's State Tournament the week of July 25th. It'll be the first time since 1991 that the event has been held in Galesburg.
