HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING

Galesburg High School placed second at the Rock Island Sectional swim meet Saturday, but it wasn't much of a victory. Sterling took the sectional title, followed by GHS, Dunlap, Canton, United Township, and Moline taking the top 6. Also, Rock Island came in 8th, Macomb 10th, Alleman 11th, and Farmington 12th. The State meet is next weekend.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

The first home game of the season for the Carl Sandburg College men's basketball team resulted in a victory. The Chargers (3-1) beat Clinton College 114-100 Saturday, though Coach Ryan Twaddle says defense was an issue, in that the Chargers would get a double-digit lead and Clinton would just battle back. Robert Hearn led the Chargers with 29 points. They'll next play at home Tuesday night at 7:30 versus Saint Ambrose.

The CSC Women split a pair of games at the John Wood Classic in Quincy. The lady Chargers beat Central Methodist Friday 51-33, but lost to the John Wood Trailblazers Saturday 64-53. Diamond Burt led the Chargers in scoring in both games. Coach Mike Bailey says he's not pleased with the team going 3 for 35 from behind the 3-point line, nor with 47 turnovers over the weekend.

Heyworth won the IHSA Class 1A State Volleyball Championship at ISU's Redbird Arena over the weekend. Chicago Christian took the title in Class 2A, while Breese Mater Dei was victorious in Class 3A, and Lyons was tops in 4A.
