| Boston GM Cherington Says Clubs Agree To Extension |
BOSTON (AP) -- Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington says Boston and Chicago have agreed to extend by at least a week their deadline for settling on compensation for Theo Epstein's departure to become the Cubs' president last month.
Epstein had one year remaining on his contract as Boston's GM when he left for the Cubs, agreeing to a five-year deal worth a reported $18.5 million.
Commissioner Bud Selig had set a Tuesday deadline, saying he would step in and settle it if an agreement hadn't been reached.
Cherington was promoted to GM after Epstein left.
