Galesburg's George Carter, Jr ran his professional boxing record to 8-0 Saturday night with a victory in Davenport, Iowa. Carter won in a unanimous decision after six rounds against Alex DeLeon of St. Charles, Missouri. The light-middleweight bout was the main attraction on the fight card over the weekend.
A number of area high school girls basketball teams will tipoff the season tonight at the annual Cranberry Classic at ROWVA High School. The early game at 6pm features Abingdon against West Central, while the second matchup of the night pits the host ROWVA Tigers against Mercer County at 7:45.
The Galesburg girls Thanksgiving Tournament begins tomorrow night, when Dunlap meets United Township at 5:30, followed by the Silver Streaks game with Illini West. The Knoxville Blue Bullets will also open play tomorrow evening, when they host Rock Island Alleman.
It's another week in the pool for the Galesburg High School girls swimming team, after they won the Rock Island Sectional title on Saturday. The Streaks outpointed Dunlap 261-254 to take their first sectional championship in 14 years. Delaney Duncan led the way with first place finishes in the 100 breaststroke and the 50 freestyle. She also was on he winning 200 medley relay team along with Rebecca Duncan, Lilly Pogue, and Danielle Beetler. The Galesburg 200 freestyle team also finished in first place. The state meet preliminaries will be held Friday night, with the finals set for Saturday in Evanston.
