Mercer County Wins 2A Football Title
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Mercer County's Devin Morford returned a fumble 95 yards as the Golden Eagles took advantage of six Althoff Catholic turnovers for a 14-7 victory in the IHSA Class 2A state football championship on Friday.

After Althoff scored first as Luke Frazier caught a 19-yard pass from Eric Mertens in the opening quarter, Aledo's Jesse Snyder tied the game late in the second quarter on a two-yard run. Morford's fumble return, the longest in IHSA state finals history, came in the third quarter and capped the scoring.

Led by 248 yards passing by Mertens and 101 yards rushing by Dennis Jackson, Althoff put up 357 yards of offense to Mercer County's 208, but turnovers stalled several extended drives by the Crusaders.
