|Undefeated United Township Up Next for Silver Streaks
|POSTED 12:12 p-m 12/18/09 Galesburg gets a break from playing state-ranked teams, but Friday night's Western Big Six road game will probably be just as difficult.
The Silver Streaks (5-3, 0-2) visit the Panther Den for a meeting with undefeated United Township. The Panthers have won their first six games, including two in conference play. One of the victories was a 65-62 triumph against state-ranked Rock Island in the Western Big Six opener for both teams.
Rocky beat Galesburg 48-45 at the Rock Island Fieldhouse last Friday night. The Streaks' other conference loss was at home the previous week against state-ranked Quincy 71-65.
U-T has used balanced scoring and athleticism to win its first half-dozen games. Two of the victories have been against Rock Island Alleman, which like Galesburg, is off to an 0-2 start in Big Six play. The Panthers won their first game against the Pioneers 79-63 in the Geneseo Thanksgiving Tournament. U-T followed that up with a 62-55 win at home last Friday night. The other Panther victories came against LaSalle-Peru (58-47) in the season opener, Geneseo (59-56) and Pekin (66-63).
Missed free-throws prevented Galesburg from stealing a game against Rock Island. The Streaks never led, but rallied in the fourth quarter to close a 15-point Rock Island lead to three. The Silver Streaks sealed their fate by making just 2-of-13 free throws after entering the game shooting 64% from the stripe. Galesburg is now shooting just 59% from the line and have attempted 56 more attempts than the opposition.
United Township's Mitch Wright scored a game-high 20 points in the Panthers' last game against Alleman. He connected on six of his team's nine 3-point baskets. Wright is second on the team in scoring at 9.3 per game. The leading scorer is junior forward Nic Hoepfner, who's averaging 10.5 a game.
Galesburg's Victor Davis leads the Western Big Six in scoring at 21.6 points per game. He was shut out in the the first half of the Rock Island game but bounced back with 16 in the second half, including three 3-point baskets. Dalton Davis, the Streaks' second leading scorer at 9.5 points per game, added 10 in the loss at Rocky.
Friday night's meeting is the 150th on the hardwood between the two schools. U-T has won eight of the last 10 but still trails the all-time series 88-61. Galesburg won the last match-up at U-T last season 49-34.
Coverage begins at 7:06 on WGIL AM 1400 and online at www.wgil.com.
