Galesburg to Square Off Against Formidable Canton
POSTED 12:00 p-m 12/21/09 Galesburg High School's girls basketball team looks to continue its solid non-conference play with a road game Monday night against red-hot Canton.

The Silver Streaks are 7-2 outside of the Western Big Six, including Saturday's 58-57 win at home against Maine South, which had nine wins coming into the game. Jessica Howard led Galesburg with 15 points and scored her team's only fourth quarter field goal - a three point basket. Shelby Pacheco added 12 points and Mickey Rodriguez scored 9 on three, 3-point baskets. The Streaks made 11 in the game but shot just 9-of-20 from the free-throw line, including 3-for-9 in the fourth quarter.

Canton (10-1, 4-1 Mid-Illini) rolled off nine straight victories to start the season, which included a Fulton County Tournament championship. The Lady Giants' only loss this season was last week, 62-34 against Limestone in Mid-Illini Conference play. Canton bounced back to win its 10th game on Saturday, 74-61 against Morton. The Potters led 16-15 after the first quarter before Canton outscored Morton (5-6, 1-2 Mid-Illini) 17-11 in the second quarter to take a five-point lead into the locker room at half-time. Morton cut the lead to three (48-45) going into the fourth quarter, but Canton put the game away with a 26-16 run over the final eight minutes to claim the victory.

Mallory Moser and Brittany Martin are two major scoring threats for the Lady Giants. Moser scored 19 and Martin 14 in the win against Morton. Canton also has wins this month against Washington (50-47), Pekin (51-44), East Peoria (51-35) and Farmington (62-46).

The two common opponents for Galesburg and Canton are Morton (83-67) and East Peoria (67-62), teams that the Silver Streaks also beat.

Galesburg has won the last three meetings against Canton: 65-47 last year, 54-35 during the 2007-08 season and 74-40 the previous year.

Canton will have to figure out how to slow down Galesburg's shooters, particularly Howard and Rodriguez. The two have 92 three-point baskets between them - Howard 51 and Rodriguez 41 - and both are averaging in double-figures. Howard leads the way at about 15 points per game and Rodriguez 11. Shelby Pacheco is also averaging in double figures at 10.8 points per game.

The game, as most of Galesburg's are, could be a contrast in offensive styles. Despite going conservative in the fourth quarter against Maine South, the Streaks are still averaging 74.3 points per game and giving up 70.5. Canton is scoring 53.7 points per game and allowing 46.4 defensively.

Pregame coverage from Ingersoll Gymnasium in downtown Canton begins at 6:40 on WGIL AM 1400.
