Galesburg Takes High Scoring Offense to Rocky
Galesburg's girls basketball team is hoping to build on the good feeling of beating a state-ranked team and perhaps erase a bad memory as well.

The Silver Streaks are on the road Thursday night for a Western Big Six match-up against Rock Island. Both teams enter the game with 4-2 overall records and both dropped their conference openers. The Silver Streaks lost at Quincy 73-67 on November 24th while Rock Island fell at home against United Township 42-37 on the 24th.

The Rocks have won two straight games: 53-15 against Lutheran and 51-42 against Hillsboro, both in the Taylorville Tournament . Galesburg snapped a two-game losing skid with an 80-77 victory against defending state champion Peoria Richwoods last Saturday in the Galesburg Thanksgiving Tournament.

Rock Island ended Galesburg's season last year. The Rocks beat the Silver Streaks 65-44 in the regional championship game at Rock Island.

Galesburg has three of the top ten scorers in the Western Big Six, led by Jessica Howard at nearly 17 points per game. Howard also leads the Big Six with 27 three-point baskets.

Mickey Rodriguez and Sara Baker are also averaging in double-figures. Rodriguez is fourth in the conference at 11.5 points per contest and has knocked down 21 shots from three-point range. Baker's averaging 10.5 points per game, good for 7th in the conference. Shelby Pacheco is 14th in scoring at 8.5 a game.

Rock Island's leading scorer is Sarita Goldsmith at 8.5 points per contest, 13th in the Big Six. Teammate Megan Sheley is 15th at 8 points per game.

Junior guard Whitney Hoover (5.7 ppg) scored 10 points in Rocky's win against Hillsboro and Goldsmith added 9.

Galesburg used a balanced scoring attack in the win against Richwoods. Howard led the way with 16 points. Baker and Rodriguez both scored 15. The Streaks made 14 three-point shots in the game. Howard and Rodriguez combined for 10 of them with five apiece.

The game will fill feature a contrast in styles. Galesburg is averaging 77 points per game on offense while Rock Island is putting up about 50 points per night.

Galesburg's sophomore team (3-3, 0-1) takes the floor against Rocky's sophs at 5:30 p-m, followed by the varsity game at 7:00. Pregame coverage for the varsity match-up begins at 6:40 on WGIL AM 1400.
