|Galesburg Trying to Lose Annoying "Goose Egg" in Western Big Six
|Galesburg High School's girls basketball team is in an unfamiliar place in the Western Big Six standings: last place.
The Silver Streaks are the only winless team in the league with an 0-2 record, the first time that's happened in more than 20 years. Galesburg will try to shed that distinction Thursday night at home against United Township.
Galesburg swept its two games with U-T last season: 48-32 and 58-55. Galesburg has dropped its two conference games so far to Quincy, 73-67, and Rock Island, 77-58, both on the road.
The Silver Streaks are coming off a red hot shooting game against Dunlap. Galesburg sank 16 three-point baskets and defeated the Eagles 84-73 to improve to 5-3. Jessica Howard, the leading scorer in the Western Big Six at 15.6 points per game, led GHS with 20 against Dunlap. Shelby Pacheco, who is 9th in the league at 8.9 points per game, added 13. Mickey Rodriguez scored 12 in the win. She is 5th in the Big Six, averaging 11.5 points per game.
The Panthers are off to a 3-5 start. The win in conference play was at Rock Island 42-37. Alleman handed U-T its only conference loss to date, 53-51 at East Moline. The leading scorer for the Panthers is Mikayla Fallon. She's 4th in the Big Six at nearly 13 points per game. U-T fell 51-41 against Limestone last Saturday, the team's second straight loss. Fallon was held to four points in the game.
The tip-off from Thiel Gym is at 7:00. Pregame coverage begins at 6:40 on WGIL AM 1400.
