| Former Illinois Player Contests Weapons Charges |
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) -- Lawyers for former University of Illinois basketball player Jereme Richmond say weapons charges against him should be dismissed. Richmond was arrested in August after police accused him of shoving a 17-year-old girlfriend and threatening to shoot her outside her house. But the Chicago Tribune reports that authorities in Lake County did not preserve the tape of a 911 call between operators and police officers who arrested the 19-year-old Richmond. Court testimony last week also called into question whether Richmond or someone else was holding a handgun. Richmond's motion is expected to be argued Friday. The Waukegan native was heavily recruited but played sparingly during his one season at Illinois. He was benched for off-court issues before leaving for the NBA draft. He wasn't drafted.
