Newly-hired Knox College football coach Damon Tomeo is en route to Galesburg today, making the drive from his home in Claremont, California to try and make an early impact on the future of Prairie Fire football. He tells WGIL he wants to be in town for a key weekend.
Tomeo, who was on the same coaching staff as Knox Athletic Director Chad Eisele when the two were in Minnesota, said he saw a great opportunity at the Galesburg College.
Tomeo said he will head back to California late next week to spend the Holidays with his family, before making the permanent transition to Galesburg in early 2013.
The Galesburg Silver Streaks varsity girls basketball team looks to snap a 2-game losing skid when they travel to East Moline tonight. The Streaks dropped games to Rock Island and Maine South late last week, and hope to pick up their third conference win against a Panther team that is also 2-1 in Western Big 6 play. Broadcast time is set for 6:40 this evening with Tom Meredith and Erik Gibson here on WGIL.
Elsewhere in girls basketball, the week-long Knoxville-Abingdon tournament continues with two more games at each location tonight. In Knoxville, it's Brimfield vs. West Central in the first game, with the host Lady Bullets playing Bushnell-Prairie City/Avon in the nightcap. At Abingdon, the opener has United battling Farmington, while the host Commandos will meet powerhouse Illini Bluffs in the second game.
Another week-long tournament is being played in Oneida and Woodhull this week, where boys teams have alternated between the two communities each night. Tonight's venue is Woodhull, where the homestanding Ridgewood Spartans will meet Williamsfield in the 7:30 game. Prior to that, United will square off with Mercer County at 6.
Here in Galesburg, the Silver Streaks Freshmen boys are set to host Chillicothe IVC at 6 o'clock.
