Sheriff: Deputies Can Take Cars Home
ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP)--The Winnebago County Sheriff says he's found a way to keep his deputies on patrol longer: Let them take their squad cars home.

The Rockford Register Star reports that Sheriff Dick Meyers has started allowing deputies to drive their squad cars home if they are scheduled to work the next day. He says that will mean his deputies will be on the patrol longer because they can pretty much start work when they get into their cars to go to works deputies and keep patrolling right up until the time they reach their homes at the end of the day.

He says it will add more than a half hour of patrol time at both the beginning and the end of their shifts.
