Man Convicted of Deadly DUI
A Gilson man has been convicted of charges accusing him of driving drunk over two years ago, causing an accident that killed one teen and injured two others.

Knox County Circuit Court records indicate 21-year-old Jose Beltran was found guilty by Judge Paul Mangieri at a bench trial on a charge of Reckless Homicide.

Beltran was arrested in June of 2011 -- less than two months after the April 22nd accident.

Beltran was at the wheel of a Chevy Cobalt that struck a utility pole at Richmond and Roberts Streets in Gilson on what was described as a rainy night.

15-year-old Brandon Melton of Knoxville was one of the passengers in the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene and suffered brain injuries.

Two other teenagers in the car were injured but later recovered.

Beltran told authorities he had been drinking beer prior to picking Melton and the others up. He allegedly had a blood-alcohol level of point-one-one-three at the time of the crash.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for December 5th.

A second person arrested -- 51-year-old Jean Lenz of Knoxville -- pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of Unlawful Delivery of Alcohol to a minor -- and was sentenced last December to 30 days in jai, a year of conditional discharge, and 80 hours of community service work.
