|There's still a week before the end of the year, but the Internal Revenue Service says it's not too late to start thinking about filing your taxes.
IRS spokesperson Michael Devine says you can still make donations to your favorite charitable organization, especially since you've already spent what you plant to on Christmas.
But Devine tells the WGIL Morning News if you do that, you need to remember something important.
"If you're going to make a charitable donation that you think you're going to want to take as a deduction on your tax return, you're going to need to know whether that organization is in fact a registered exempt organization with the IRS."
Devine says you can simply ask the organization if they're certified, or you can go the IRS website for help in determining that.
He says make sure you have plenty of documentation when you make the donation as well, in case the IRS has questions.
In some cases, Devine says, rules for charitable donations and determining the value of them has changed.
