|Tom Gilbert, age 86 of Abingdon, died at 5:15 am Sunday, January 13, 2013 at his home.
He was born on December 31, 1926 in Maynard, Arkansas, the son of Bishop Hershel and Bertha Agnes (Cox) Gilbert. He married Clara Landon on March 8, 1958 in Abingdon.
Tom is survived by his wife, Clara; two sons, Thomas William (and Sherie) Gilbert of Michigan City, Indiana and Timothy Wayne (and Christine) Gilbert of RR Abingdon; two daughters, Sandra Lea (and Curt) Smail of Maryville, Missouri and Sarah Kathleen (and John) Rubacha of West Lafayette, Indiana; eleven grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren; two brothers, Chester (and Sharon) Gilbert of Petersburg and Lester (and Erma) Gilbert of Petersburg; and one sister, Ailene Shotts of Galesburg. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and three sisters.
He had lived in Abingdon since 1947. He was a Navy veteran of WW II and a member of the Harry E. Wiles American Legion Post #381. He worked as a mechanic at the former Dechow Motor Company in Abingdon and later worked for 28 years at Galesburg Lincoln Mercury, retiring on June 26, 1987. He also had studied welding and aviation at Carl Sandburg College.
As Tom requested, his body will be donated to medical science. A time to celebrate his life with his family will be held from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday, January 19, 2013 at the Abingdon Banking Center Community Room. Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
