|Richard W. Hays, 85, of Galesburg, died at 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Heartland Health Care Center.
He was born July 31, 1927 in Clark County, Mo. the son of Samuel and Ruth Duncan Hays. He married Dorothy Dinger August 23, 1950 in Kahoka, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; four sons, James (and Myra) Hays of Southlake, Texas, Stephen (and Laura) Hays of Garland, Texas, Raymond (and Debra) Hays of Galesburg, and David (and Theresa) Hays of Lebanon, N.H.; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and a brother, Roland (and Patty) Hays of Webster, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters.
Dick worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for 23 years and later was a ticket agent for Amtrak for 17 years, retiring in 1989. He was raised and educated in Kahoka, Mo., where he graduated from high school in 1945. He attended Hannibal-LaGrange College and Kirksville College. He has lived in Galesburg since 1964.
Dick was a member of First Christian Church. He was also a charter member of the Galesburg Evening Lions Club, a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, and a board member of the Galesburg Railroad Museum.
Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the First Christian Church. Rev. Greg Fitch and Rev. M.J. Fitch will officiate. There will be no visitation. Cremation will be accorded. Private family burial will be in Oak Lawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to First Christian Church, Galesburg Evening Lions Club or the Galesburg Railroad Museum.
