|Mr. Harvey D. Safford, 95, of Galesburg died at 12:07 am Tuesday, February 19, 2013 in OSF St. Mary Medical Center.
He was born November 14, 1917 in Fulton County, Ill. near Farmington the son of Clark and Adrienne Marshall Safford. He married Arlene Rommel on July 22, 1946 in Galesburg. She survives.
Also surviving is his son, James H. Safford of Bettendorf, Iowa; his daughter, Sharon (Tom) Harty of Franksville, Wis.; two grandchildren, John Harty and Adrienne Peterson; one great grandson, Lucas Harty and several nieces and nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
Harvey served as Capt. in the Army during WWII and participated in the D Day Invasion in France. After the war he worked as an agriculture teacher in the Belvedere and Williamsfield area. He farmed in the Wataga area. He later worked as Quality control Chemist for Archer-Daniels Midland Corporation. He graduated from Farmington High School and University of Illinois in 1939. Harvey was a member of the Central Congregational Church and served as an usher there for several years.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 am Saturday, February 23, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. James Ecklund will officiate. Visitation will be from 9-10 am Saturday at the chapel. Private Family burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Farmington, Ill. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warriors.
