A full weekend of competition is on the schedule for the Galesburg American Legion baseball team. Coach Steve Cheeseman's squad will be in Wheaton for tournament play (beginning at 3pm) today, as they battle St. Charles and Rock Island in a pair of opening round games. Tomorrow, Galesburg will play Arlington and Wheaton, and then finish the weekend with bracketed games on Sunday. Post 285 sports a record of 11-1 after last night's 12-8 win over Moline. Drew Nall hit a pair of home runs to back the pitching of Dylan Klinck.
Former Galesburg Silver Streak catcher Chad Johnson is on the move in his professional baseball career. Johnson was told yesterday that he would be leaving the Royals extended spring training site in Arizona to play for the Burlington, North Carolina team in the Appalachian League. Johnson was selected by Kansas City in the fifth round of last summer's amateur draft, and has been receiving instruction and training in Arizona for the past year.
A high-profile, retired major league player will be in Burlington next week to manage the minor league Bees. Omar Vizquel, an 11-time gold glove winner, will be at the helm for Burlington for next weekend (June 20th-24). Vizquel will be filling in for manager Jamie Burke, who will be gone in Oregon to visit family.
