Burgess, Samuel Lee

Samuel Lee Burgess, age 63 of rural Galesburg, died at 8:22 am Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at his home.

He was born on April 5, 1951, in Avon, the son of Ronald and Bertha (Faler) Burgess. He married Marian Shaver in Abingdon and they divorced. He married Mary Kay Barber in Texas and they divorced. He recently married Victoria “Vicki” Pointer.

Sam is survived by his wife Vicki; two sons, Ronald “Toby” J. Burgess and Robert “Bob” J. Burgess both of Abingdon; one stepdaughter, Leanne R. Ramsey of Moline; three step-grandchildren; one brother, James (and Norma) Day of Galesburg; one sister, Vonneda Nickels of Galesburg: and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two infant sisters, Patricia Day and May Louise Day, and three adult sisters, Roberta Lankford, Gloria Ratajczak and Alberta Hanson.

He was an Abingdon native and graduated from Abingdon High School in 1969. He then served in the Air Force. He also had lived in Austin, Texas for 15 years and graduated from Austin Community College with an Associate Degree in Heating and Cooling. He was also a licensed Jeweler. He was a retired Iron Worker. He was a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge #185. He was a past Alderman for the City of Abingdon. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, and motorcycle riding. He was a member of the Knox County Conservation & Sportsman’s Club and served as president for 7 years. Sam was well known in the area for his deer processing.

Cremation will be accorded. To celebrate his life, the family will receive friends from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the Hinchliff-Pearson-West Abingdon Chapel followed by a prayer service led by Mrs. Eleanor Landon. The family will also receive friends at their home following the prayer service. Look on Route 41 north of Abingdon for the sign “Sams.”
