CHICAGO (AP) — Nearly 700 contests and some 2,000 candidates will be on ballots in towns throughout Illinois’ most populous county.
The Cook County Clerk’s Office says 36 referenda are also on suburban Chicago ballots in Tuesday’s election.
Some candidates won’t be sweating it out. More than 63 percent of the races are uncontested. They include 10 of the 19 contests for mayor or village president.
But in 59 Cook County precincts, 100 percent of the races are contested. That includes those in Evanston and Hanover townships. In Thornton, Schaumburg and Bremen townships, at least 82 percent of the races are contested races.
Turnout is likely to fall below 50 percent. The clerk’s office says turnout in the past four consolidated elections in suburban Cook County was between 17 and 21 percent.
