A local alderman recently shared his thoughts on Tuesday’s elections, Galesburg City Council and the state of the city in general.
Jeremy Karlin, who won an uncontested re-election to the 7th Ward earlier this week, says “making Galesburg a better place starts with residents getting involved.”
Karlin says “voting is an indirect way of doing so, but it’s what people do on a day to day basis that really matter.”
Karlin cites a local history lesson as a basis for future growth. He tells the WGIL Morning News that essentially, positivity is the key.
“There was an initiative a long time ago in Galesburg, where all the merchants in town wanted to make sure that all of the people who moved here had a more positive experience,” says Karlin. “If they discovered that you were from out of town, they said thank you for coming to Galesburg–and it was a concerted effort. I think what Galesburg could use, is if everyone was just a little more positive–a little more optimistic.”
Karlin says in Galesburg, dealing with budget issues during a time where little state aid can be counted upon will be a challenge coming up. However, he says municipalities across the state have the same issues on their plate, and that the synergy of a lot of smaller issues can once again be turned positive.
Karlin was recently elected to his 2nd term. He says incentivizing individuals by dealing with the issues that are important to them, is the reason he continues to run.
