Moffitt Talks Firefighter Importance, Honors at Capitol

Don MoffittAn area representative was in Springfield yesterday to honor Firefighters.

State Rep. Don Moffitt is the head of the State Fire Caucus, who held ceremonies at the Capitol’s Firefighter Memorial yesterday.

Moffitt commented on the event, saying that it’s “a reminder of how lucky we are.” He tells WGIL, that “we are forever indebted to firefighters, who risk their lives daily.”

“They are there for all of us 24/7,” says Moffitt. “They are such huge parts of our community–as are all first responders. Anytime we are in need of help, they are there for us. They save lives, they save property. The more we can do,  legislatively, to provide them with the best possible equipment and the best possible training, then we are more likely to have better outcomes.”

Moffitt says he’s thankful that no firefighters had to be added to the memorial this year. This was reportedly the 22nd consecutive year of the honor ceremony.

The Gilson republican has been working on a fire service examination bill as of late, that would directly affect firefighters. If passed, military personnel would have the opportunity to take the exam and potentially enter the field until the age of 40. That bill has passed the house, and is currently sitting in Senate.
