One-Man Play Leads Welles Celebration in Illinois Town

WOODSTOCK, Ill. (AP) — A one-man play is among the events this month in Woodstock to mark what would have bene the 100th birthday of Orson Welles.

Welles was born in Wisconsin but spent some of his teenage years in the small town about 50 miles northwest of Chicago. Welles was born May 6, 1915.

Actor Erik Van Beuzekom tells the Northwest Herald that he doesn’t try to impersonate Welles in his “Rosebud, The Lives of Orson Welles.” The play is being performed Saturday at the Woodstock Opera House.

Instead Van Beuzekom says he tries to channel Welles’ spirit, as much as anything.

He’s performed the play in Seattle, Los Angeles and elsewhere since 2012.

He says he’s amazed by Welles’ career in movies, on radio and in theaters.
