Chicago Police Superintendent Touts Community Policing

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago’s police superintendent says steps taken to lessen tensions between the community and law enforcement have helped prevent confrontations like those in cities like Baltimore and Ferguson, Missouri.

Superintendent Garry McCarthy told a Chicago civic group Wednesday that he’s put more officers on beat patrols that allow them to get to know residents better. He says the patrols build trust between the department and the community.

Chicago police are dealing with at least two cases in which officers are accused of unwarranted fatal shootings. But McCarthy says there has been a drop in officer-involved shootings in Chicago in recent years, suggesting officers are getting better at diffusing tense situations.

He also said crimes are being solved at a higher rate, and argued it is partly due to residents trusting police.
