SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Records obtained by the Chicago Sun-Times under the Freedom of Information Act show that the salary of Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner’s education secretary is being paid under the Illinois Department of Human Services.
Rauner hired former charter school director Beth Purvis at an annual salary of $250,000. Purvis’ contract signed March 13 indicates that she will be paid under the agency while reporting directly to the governor’s office.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Rauner’s office announced three weeks later that the Department of Human Services had low funds. A total of $26 million in services was cut, causing some programs to completely shut down.
The cuts later were restored, but Rauner’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2016 calls for more cuts within the agency.
Purvis declined to comment Wednesday.
