PROSPECT HEIGHTS, Ill. (AP) — A souped-up golf cart is the newest crime-fighting tool for one suburban Chicago police department.
The (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald report Prospect Heights is buying a $13,500 all-terrain vehicle that looks similar to a golf cart.
The department is looking to build on past successes in tamping down gang activity in the city by adding the less intimidating vehicle to their fleet.
Police Chief Jamie Dunne says squad cars can serve as a barrier between the public. The ATW will be used mostly on the city’s east side, which has a history of high crime and includes the Chicago Executive Airport.
The electric-charged vehicle can reach up to 25 mph and runs for 50 hours before needing a recharge.
