Illinois State Budget Impasse Sparks Concern Over Disrupted State Services

ILsealWith Illinois Lawmakers at an Impasse with Governor Bruce Rauner over the state budget, many state services are preparing for the worst.Illinois State Comptroller Leslie Munger says moving forward with the budget lawmakers want to pass is irresponsible.

Rauner says he will not sign a budget that is $4 billion dollars over the revenue the state brings in, creating further deficit for the state.

Munger tells Galesburg’s Morning News on WGIL that even creating a temporary budget will only help for that one-month, but not the future budget planning of these services.

“I guess that it would help us pay some bills, although it creates a lot of extra work for our office, having a temporary budget in place, and importantly for those organizations that really most depend on state funding, it really just gives them an extra month, it doesn’t help them with their planning,” says Munger. “I’ve heard from so many of the social service organizations, even now we’re seeing companies, organizations like Catholic Charities, cut back and close shelters because they have no predictability of what state funding will be.”

Munger says Illinois shouldn’t be spending money the state doesn’t have, and that Rauner is just standing up for the taxpayers.
